I've never been much a runner. I played all kinds of sports growing up that involved a lot of running, but getting myself to just go for a run without some other motivation of a game was always challenging. In the past few years, I've embraced my slower pace and taken to walking. When I was in high school, I probably would've been embarrassed to consider this exercise, but now, "move my body" is on my to do list every day, and I proudly check that off if I go for a walk.

The effects on my mental and physical health are notable when I have a regular routine of walking. Over the last year, walking after work became a necessary part of my day. It helped me reset and refresh myself for my evening. Work-life balance is not easy to maintain, and walking helped me clear my mind and get back in my body. Whether you walk for a minute, a mile, or a marathon, let this be a judgement-free, stress-free practice. When we walk, it doesn't matter how fast we're going, who we're with, or where we're going.

Discipline is what will make your habit sustainable, so start small, but be consistent. Set a goal and stick to it. If you want to walk three times a week, get your planner out, and write it into your schedule. If you want to walk for 30 minutes, set a timer on your phone or watch when you start. If you need a little motivation to get started, make a fun walking playlist, pick out a podcast to listen to, or ask a friend to join you on your walk in person or over the phone!
